My kid is a big boy and I monitor his homework myself everyday. Therefore, I find him no problem in handling it.
Don't be scared by the size of the workbook. It just takes half of the page for writing Chinese words. For English, most of the work involves colouring, matching, sentence re-arrangement & circling the correct answer. Maths only involves some simple calculations and counting.
Moreover, whether the load is heavy or not depends on your expectation. My kid can finish the daily homework in 30-45 mins (including corrections and a break), which is acceptable by me.
For samll kids, it would be a bit difficult for them. But if you are not very demanding on the quality of your kid's outputs, it should be fine.
