I heard from my friend who used to be a teacher that nowadays many schools offer activity-based teaching. At that moment, I just wonder if that was true. Thanks for your input. Is the primary section of your school DSS or Gov't subsidized ?

Lydia

I totally agree with you in the sense that it's very impt to me that Davin enjoys school. That's why I have to spend more time checking which school suits him.

Dear All

As you know, we can't go into the classroom now before morning exercise. Yet, Mr. Shawn was so nice that when he saw me this morning he took the initiative to talk to me about the kid & the school. Grateful for this & for the creative ideas he makes to let kids involved in learning phonics & word recognition. Our kids are fortnate to be taught by good teachers throughout these years.

Lydia,

I let Brian try to describe the picture again yesterday. However, he said he did it already on Monday and there's no need to do it again. BTW, is Preston also taking the Mon + Wed noon session?

ljsze,

It's true that many schools offer activity-based teaching and they use this as a selling point. However, some schools will only adopt activity-based teaching in one or two subjects and traditional method for the rest.

P1 of my school will switch to DSS starting from this Sept.

How about secondary schools ? Will many schools offer activity-based teaching ? Or, the kids are big enough & stable enough to receive traditional teaching ? What's your viewpoint about this ? I really have no idea. You know there are more subjects in sec schools & a lot more to remember.

Doris,
Preston is in the same session as Brian. Preston also said similar thing to Miss Cheng. One day Miss Cheng asked him something related to the interview program, he then told Miss Cheng that he would tell her on Monday class.
They are not little boys anymore, they have their own idea.

ljsze,
I also worried about choosing the appropriate school for Preston. That's why I get more info from school teachers, teachers from ECA etc. Basically, most comments said that Preston is not very suitable for very traditional schools.

Yes, it's really a headache. You know we have been educated in a traditional way for years. Yet, the world is changing now & I'm really not sure which school suits our kid esp. when both Preston & Davin are not suitable for traditional schools.

Lydia, ljsze,

Actually, the so-called traditional schools also offer activity-based teaching in some subjects. It's just the matter of proportion of traditional teaching : acitivity-based teaching.

Activity-based teaching is more time consuming compared with traditional teaching but students can learn more and they can develop some useful skills through acitivities.

ljsze,

Most of the sec schools in HK are 'traditional' but starting from Sept 09, the New Senior Secondary curriculum will be launched and activity-based teaching will become more and more important. Subjects like Integrated Humanities, Liberal Studies, Other Learning Experience, Project-Based Learning will be activity-based. Besides that, School-Based Assessment of all subjects also requires the element of acitivity-based teaching.

Doris,
Thanks a lot for your info. It's not easy to think about primary school so I don't think about secondary school at this moment. Anyway, it's good to know that some schools are changing to more activity-based and match the reality world more.

Real thanks for your sharing. Now, I'm more relieved. I do think that kids have more fun & can take more initiative to learn under activity-based teaching.

Lydia
