I know that many parents talk to their children in both English and Cantonese. Sometimes, English and Cantonese in one sentence. Sometimes, full sentence in English and most of the times in Cantonese.

But I also heard that it is no good for one to speak two languages at the same time. It is better to speak one lanugage by one person, say mother speaks Cantonese, father speaks English.

I am still thinking whether it does any harm to speak both at the same time. By doing so, the child can learn English, at least some vocabularies. Say, many parents talk to children, like: apple 好好味呀, 大家要sharing呀, 同小朋友shake hand 啦, etc. Or even talk to them in one complete English sentence. It is also quite common even among adult world to speak like that.

Do you think this kind of practice is good? Or just according to some experts, it is better to communicate with them in our mother tongue.

Which way is better? May I have your comment, please? Thanks so much!

I personally think that it is very annoying. It also gives the kid the wrong impression that it is okay to mix Chinese grammer with English grammer. E.g. "大家要sharing呀". Should not be "sharing"...should be "大家要share呀" instead.

Absolutely not.

I'd think either English only or Cantonese only (in fact, any language as long as no other languages are mixed with it) is okay but absolutely not both in a mixed mode. Further, try not to say something like "no la" or "yes wo"... that's Chinglish! :hammer:

I also agree with that.. as I seldom speak this kind of Chinglish to my children. However, it is really too common in Hong Kong. I always hear this, e.g. many of my children's classmates' parents speak in that way too..

My relatives also said, "why not", at least it can give them a chance to know more English vocabularies. That's why now I hesitate and would like to ask for all of your comment.

Then what do you think if we sometimes speak in Cantones in full sentence and sometimes we speak in English in full sentence. Is it good??

I do sometimes speak one sentence of English and one sentence of Chinese. The reason behind it is I would like my kids know how to express themselves in both languages.

However, mixture of Chinese and English in one sentence definitely no good as kids would get mix up with the grammar of both languages.

I would be the one who speak English and Daddy would be the one who speaks Cantonese. But daddy told me my daughter seems understand more in English. Maybe it is because I play with her more than her daddy :-)
