As a 2014 IB graduate (and also a DSE escaper lol), I would like to add something. IB curriculum (in terms of the breath, the toughness of the courses) is probably a little harder then NSS. For example, maths SL teaches lots of stuffs that are not taught in DSE core maths, for example, Calculus, and some stats and probability stuffs. However, IB examination is probably more straight forward then DSE exam results. One great example is maths SL exam questions. Honestly I suck at maths. I got less then 40 marks in my F4 Maths final exam (in a declining traditional famous boys' school). I got a 3 in IB1 maths mock exam. But I got a 7 at the end simply by practicing the past papers over and over and over and over and over again. Seriously, for some subjects, practice makes perfect. The 2014 IB maths questions are rly similar to questions from 2009-2013.. The point i wanna add is, IB exam questions are less tricky then DSE exam questions.
Obviously, the IB coursework is much more rigorous then NSS. U CAN JUST HEA IN NSS F4-F5. like there are loads and loads of internal assessments to hand in, sometimes over 3 per week. holy shit.... but it is similar to university workload (as i heard, not sure). so it does prepare us for university.
Another point about university admission, the probability of getting into top 3 (in HK) normal courses (like arts, science, social science, normal business, engineering) BY TAKING IB is much higher then taking DSE. for example, for HKU social science (which i will be studying in next 4 yrs), the offer is only around 36. (which is only an average score in HK) BUT, for the god subjects like medicine, i don't think its easier. U need around 43 points for HKU med, for example. 43 points is like 99% percentile. This means HKU med admits top 1% of IB student. We also have to take account into the fact that IB schools are ON AVERAGE harder to get in a AVERAGE SCHOOL in HK. Also, socio-economic status is related to intelligence, and possibly examination results (don't rly wanna bring in this pt as it seems socially-sensitive and possibly offensive to some ppl, but i do think its true to a large extent, with more educational resources + genetic factors). Therefore, the IB candidate field is prolly tougher then DSE candidate field. Furthermore, non-jupas focuses more on non-acadamic stuffs (esp for god subjects) like ECA, personal statement, and interview performances. So the point i try to make is that, to get into god subjects of top 3 (uni in HK), taking IB isn't easier then DSE.
Another good thing bout taking IB is, even if ur predicted grades aren't high (like less then 33 i say), u can still get into very top university in canada and aus. Example, UBC, admits students with even around 26-27 points for some programs (which is considered redic low in HK). Melbourne U admits students with 25-28 points for some programs.. the lists are so long i don wanna list all out. If your child wants to go to aus and canada, taking IB is A MUCH BETTER OPTION THEN DSE (assuming u can afford the expense tuition fee in IB obv)..
