稚言治語, My son has just went to Waterloo to see the doctor, the doctor said that we can't do anything as my child is only 4 mths old. He then made another appointment (Jan 2006). He said that my son may only has the left ear has problem and the right ear is normal. He also claimed that there are many child like my son, is it right? But I really worry about my son. Sometimes, when I clapped hands on his right, he had no response at all, why? Chr336 |

Dear NatalieLay, Can you send me the private clinics list for ABR service? My email address is [email protected] Although my BB passed the hearing test at private hospital, she failed the re-test at the health center this afternoon and needed to be referred to Yaumatei clinic for further test. Thanks! |

Chr336, The doctor is right, since your son is still very young and u have done ABR for him already (am I remembering it correctly??), there is nothing further to be done now both in term of diagnosis and treatment. What u can do is relax, observe and treat him like normal hearing baby! Remember? Having one normal ear means he can still hear u talking! ;-) For "real" full diagnosis in which your son will give behaviour responses (not ABR - he does not need to give responses during ABR), u may need to wait until he's 2 yrs old. Some experienced audiologist maybe able to do it before that. For treatment (if he really needs it), u may even need to wait until he's 7 yrs old or up. At 4 months old, some babies know how to ignore some "non-sense" sounds already. If u "test" him too much at home without reward, he learns to ignore u sometimes! 8-) That's why we cannot book kids for testing too often and we always associate reward with their responses. Is it common to have "unilateral hearing loss"? Well, it's more "common" nowadays because of the advance in diagnostic tech! From my observation, I saw about 5% of such cases among the kids I served in HK. |

joysywong, What kind of test has your baby underwent in the private hospital? Sometimes diff test may give diff results. If the hospital did ABR for your baby, it's considered "more accurate" in some sense than OAE. If it's doing OAE, it might be using a diff pass/ fail criteria compared to MCH and that's why u got confusing results. Here is a link to more info about baby's hearing test: CLICK HERE I may send u the list of test centers if u want. |

稚言治語, "p小姐和k字頭個靚仔一樣,既是我的同班同學(讀言語治療時),也是你的同班同學" Of course I know her! I remember she just quitted being a HKU instructor and went into private practice since last year! In that case u should know half of my audiologist classmates already. u know what? L小姐 (also in private practice now) is also my classmate in secondary school! It's a small world ;-) ""老友狗狗",主角是隻柴犬啊﹗" Thanks for telling me! Definitely I cannot find it here in LA... nearly ALL films are Hollywood! And it costs US$8-10 to go to the cinema, so have to wait until I go back to HK and get the DVD (I need to buy back "The story of Quill" too! :-P ) Daisy has mentioned in one of her message that she has brought her baby to 聰伶計劃 of 香港聾人福利促進會 already. I think it's EMB's preparation of outsourcing the habilitation service! |

Canossa Hospital said that the system they used is AABR, which tests the entire hearing pathway, from the outer ear to the brainstem, so more accurate than the one used by govt health center. Anyway, please send me the information you have, my add is [email protected] Thanks a lot!!! |

Hi Shiba-Inu & 稚言治語, 子喬 actually has EMB training per month. The EMB inspector is very helpful on hearing aids usage & also the daily communication techniques (especially on ways to stimulate the sound reception). However, we do want more professional 語言訓練 (no matter it is provided by government or private sector). We have visited the private audiologist (Ms Pxxxx). She is very caring & patience. The advice she gave us is more focus on 語言訓練 & that of EMB is on hearing. Anyway, I think both is good. Life becomes busy or 充實 to us & 子喬 (見醫生, EMB, 語言訓練). Lastly, thanks for your help. Keep posted of 子喬's progress. Hope there will be much more & more good news upcoming. 子喬媽上 :-D |
