Hi, there is no interview for Abacus for both kids and parents because they think kids are too small to have interview and they are confident that as long as the kids can communicate well in Eng, they can teach them well. So, the 1st priority is you yrself to assure yr kid can communicate well in Eng. Some people said that some kids dropout during the school year because they cannot communicate in Eng.

As for nursery, no such requirement for Abacus. My daughter goes to Lalaland in phase 1 of Metro City at TKO. It is ok. Some of the teachers were the TA of Abacus. There is no Chinese in Lalaland.

hi bbix, my niece and the daughter of my friend studied greenville. No good at all. There is no nursery in lalaland. But my daughter goes there twice a week for 1.5 hr each time. She can speak very good English now. If you don't have maid, I'd suggest you let him watch the DVD series of Barney. They are quite good. My daughter learns a lot of English from them.

Hi r4parents

How old is your girl now and how long has she joined the playgroup ? What's the minimum age for intake to the playgroup of Lalaland ? Do your maid accompany the kid in the playgroup ? How much is it ? Sorry for putting up so many questions ! :adore: :adore:

r4parents, how old of your kid? and how bad is greenville? what about abacus? it has nursery? do u speak to your daugher in eng? or employ a maid? cos as I mentioned, I hvn't employ a maid, do u think it's enough to let him watch Barney dvd for learning eng cos I want to talk to him in cantonese, and I think he could learn best eng fm abacus school.
and hv u heard any good nursery in TKO, KLN tong or sai kung? cos I want to let him study in nursery for a yr, so if u were me, u will choose nursery near home, or the best one? thks

Can the young kid really understand the English DVD?

Hi Esp and BBIX,
My daughter is 2 years and 8 months. What I meant her Eng is good is that she cannot use simple but grammatically correct Eng sentences to express her needs, ideas. She knows quite a lot of words compared with other kids of same age, which was told by the teacher.

In my previous email, I did mention Lalaland and Barney; however, none of them can contribute to the Eng ability of my daughter alone. From my limited experience got from my elder son and my daughter, I think we, parents, should provide a very good English environment for our kid to live with. This should include speaking, listening and reading. So, whatever "genuine" English-speaking playgroup, DVD's, CD's, books and so on are good tools as long as your kid loves them. I am lucky. My maid's English is quite Ok and she always reads story book to my daughter during day time. She also accompanies my daughter to the playgroup. One more point I would like to share about teaching my two kids English is that "never speak half English half Cantonese". The teachers in IS will never understand a sentence like "let's eat 飽飽" or "see 車車".

Hope the above info can help you a bit.

Hi BBIX,
Since I only have two kids, I cannot give you too many comments about which nursery is good. However, my elder son, who is now 10 years old, has studied in Yew Chung for 5 years. He joined there when he was 2 years old. Looking back, if I were you, I would choose a nursery near to my home which is what I am doing for my daughter. It is very painful for a small kid to travel for so long to attend a nursery class. To me, there is no "the best" nursery but there is only good nursery where my kids can enjoy learning new things and meeting new friends. Different school may fit for different kids and parents. I like IS very much but none of my brothers and sisters and my friends sends their kids to IS.

Hi esp & all moms,

My son was born in May 2002 and he started in Abacus last year, ie, he was 3 when he started K1. Before my son started kinder, we mainly speak with him in English, and I don't think there was any communication problems for him when he started in Abacus. I think kids can take up different lanaguage quite easily, as long as they can understand daily English, it's OK for them to start in Abacus. And I'm totally agree with r4partents, "No half English and Cantonese." :-D

Now, my son can speaks in both Cantonese & English. For Mandarin, as they only have 1 session around 15-20 mins per day and mainly for singing, therefore, he can't communicate in Mandarin yet, but he can understand some simple vocabulary & greetings.
